David Van Ly graduated with a BMedSci (Hons 1) from The University of Sydney in 2008. David then pursued a Ph.D. investigating the role of respiratory viral infections in airways disease exacerbations with the Respiratory Research Group at the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research Glebe, under the supervision of Prof. Judith Black and Dr Brian Oliver. Upon completing his Ph.D. in 2012, David transitioned into the scientific industry working at AMS Laboratories Sydney, as a Senior Virologist overlooking virological testing of disinfectants and antiviral compounds. In 2013, David joined the newly developed Genome Integrity Group at the Children’s Medical Research Institute Westmead, as a postdoctoral scientist under the supervision of Dr Anthony Cesare.  As one of the first scientists in this lab, David contributed to the lab’s development whilst working on high throughput telomere imaging assays using super resolution microscopy to understand how telomere structure correlates to biological function. David went on to complete his medical training (MD) from the University of Notre Dame Sydney in 2019. David currently works as a medical officer at SWSLHD Liverpool Hospital whilst continuing his ongoing research in telomere structural biology with the Genome Integrity Unit in the hope to translate his research into clinical medicine.
